how do you paint something so unprecedented as the resurrection ?
Jyoti Sahi has solved this puzzle by portraying elements from both the crucifixion and resurrection...
as though the crucified christ is bursting with new life...
try spending some time just looking at this painting...
what emerges from the patterns ? what can you see here ? ...
do these shapes remind you of anything ?
I tend to see something new each time I look...
the rather sharp tree branches that speak to me of pain..
. and yet the outstretched hands reaching upwards as though full of new life, growing into something completely new... into a new future that is far more joyful...
yet with the shape of a cup deep in the centre... what could that symbolise ?
...two figures... could they be Mary & John ?
...two figures... could they be Mary & John ?
...Mary, given another son to look after...
and John, to comfort Mary in the depths of her grief...
and to write the anonymous gospel that now bears his name...
... ... ...

please spend a little time just looking at this painting...
gradually you may notice more and more emerges than you notice at first.
what do you see ?
what does this painting remind you of ?
I have seen this called “Resurrection” ... but also “Transfiguration “
I can see here a depiction of Christ as the ‘living water’ of John ch 4 & ch 7
painted as though he is a waterfall & a tree of life,
with several people hidden in the background
its the kind of painting where you see something different each time you look at it...

“Spirit of God unseen as the wind,
gentle as is the dove...”

for Advent Sunday
Dalit Madonna by Jyoti Sahi
Methodist Collection of Modern Christian Art
click link below for details:
Advent Sunday...the beginning of a new year,
& this year we turn to the Gospel of Luke ...
Matthew tells the nativity story from the point of view of Joseph
Luke gives us Mary
·
Luke is the only one who tells us about the
Angel Gabriel visiting Mary, of Mary visiting her cousin Elizabeth....& the whole story of Zechariah,
Elizabeth & the birth of John the Baptist
Luke alone writes about the shepherds the outcasts visiting the
manger...and this seems so pertinent these days, with all kinds of poor and vulnerable people suffering through the cuts in UK; people in the poorest areas of the world already suffering the effects of climate change, not to mention the way refugees are now stuck in various bottlenecks across Europe...
this painting seemed very appropriate for this first week of Advent...
